The 80/20 Question
I sometimes ask entrepreneurs I work with one simple question.
It always cuts deep.
"How much of what you do, do you do because you have to?
And how much because it genuinely excites you?"
Most people pause.
Then say something like: eighty, twenty.
Eighty percent obligation. Twenty percent living.
Then it goes quiet.
Because that feels strange to say out loud.
Aren't you an entrepreneur?
Don't you do what you want?
Yes.
And yet.
The freedom you built for yourself fills up on its own.
With responsibility.
With other people's expectations.
With your own standards.
With the belief that if you don't do it, it won't get done right.
Until one day you notice you're managing your life instead of living it.
I ask: what would change if you flipped that ratio?
Always the same response.
A pause.
Something like longing.
Sometimes tears.
And then: "I don't think I allow myself that."
That's where it is.
Not in the calendar.
Not in the structure.
Not in the team.
In the permission you don't give yourself.
